My mid-life gap year, or two years, began in December 2006. After travelling through Arabia to Australia, my partner and I stayed with friends in Sydney whilst we organised a four-wheel drive car with extra fuel tanks and an off-road caravan, then we hit the road on New Year's Eve.
Through the Blue Mountains to the outback, back o' Bourke then down to the Eyre Peninsula and along the coast via Melbourne and Sydney all the way to Queensland, north of Brisbane where we sailed the Whitsunday Islands and I learnt to scuba dive.
We returned to the UK in spring 2007 and then travelled out to Sydney again in December 2007, this time via Hong Kong where we stayed in the New Territories. We picked up our 'rig' and drove from Sydney to Perth across the Nullarbor, through the land of giant trees and vineyards in the south-west, and up through Perth as far north as Exmouth. A very different coast.
In summer 2008, we travelled round Europe in a campervan, as far as Croatia then came to live in Devon, in our beautiful, secluded seaside valley. A world in itself, it has rare wetlands and grasslands, astonishing bird and wild life and a rare calming energy from the Gara Brook. It's an old, old place with a wise, gentle soul that has attracted artists, writers, creatives and craftspeople for centuries.
The writing in this section is inspired by the energies and ideas of Australia, and was written on my journeys, inwards and outwards, as I travelled through new worlds.
I hope you enjoy the journey.
